Overview

Whole Gator is the University of Florida's health and wellness app for iOS and Android. A third-party contractor built the first version and then handed it to our team. When the app needed an update, we had to either fix that code or replace it.

My Role

Lead Developer. I made the call to rewrite the app instead of patching it. The contractor's code was old and hard to work with. Updating its dependencies, modernizing it, and making it accessible would have taken more work than starting over. A rewrite would also leave code that was easier to maintain.

I rebuilt it from scratch in about a week to meet a tight deadline. The app mostly displays information, so most of the work went into project setup, accessibility, and improving performance. I also made it offline-first: it caches its data locally, so it still works without a connection.
